you may also have a better experience using the juj driver instead of the dtoverlay. its a bit more involved, but the documentation is great, and it does lots of tricks to squeeze more speed out of the screen.

i am unable to build the fbcp-ili9341 LCD driver on my raspberry pi and i dont know what i am missing.
There's an open issue -- https://github.com/juj/fbcp-ili9341/issues/43 -- with symptoms that look like yours. Looks like 32-bit PiOS is available for download, so you could retry with that.

Need help diagnosing my mistakes.
The display uses a ILI9341 screen controller. I understand, because of limitations of SPI, these displays have a pretty terrible refresh rate. In trying to figure out exactly how terrible it is, I stumbled upon these alternative drivers that aim to massively increase the refresh rate by allowing the CPU and display to speak more directly: https://github.com/juj/fbcp-ili9341
