2TB microSD card is on the way early next year
I've used f3 (fight flash fraud) on every SD card I've bought for myself or someone else. Never had a failure, but I've pretty much only bought cards direct from mixza on aliexpress.
I'd certainly recommend testing any flash device you get, especially cheap ones. It might take eight hours to write and verify, but it's well worth it. (if you can abide disputes/returns)

Samsung PRO Plus 512 GB - Bad Card or Fake Card?
It is generally a good idea to test Flashmedia if the reported size is correct even if it looks real. On *Nix systems i can reccomend https://fight-flash-fraud.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ It usually takes <20 min for 1TB sd cards.
-
Did I get a faked SSD? Shows as 2Tb but WD SN lookup shows 1Tb.
Just use this or something similar the determine the actual size, which you should do when you buy flash storage of any kind. Just keep in mind that the usable size will be less than the actual size due to over provisioning.

app that tests (micro)sd cards?
F3 (“Fight Flash Fraud”) inherently involves a thorough integrity check and so, ignoring fraud, has as confirmed faults for me.

Can I use a steam deck if I’m a tech dummy?
If I remember correctly, the SteamOS formatting process integrates https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3 so you'll probably just get an error upon formatting saying the flash is bad/counterfeit.

SSD as Long Term Storage Testing
To workaround the various tricks a drive can play, one may wish to use a capacity tester in addition to hardware stats.
Fight Flash Fraud (f3)
https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3
One could setup a destructive wear-test, but results may not be generalized between lots with identical model number. This is because some manufactures sell performant products for early reviews/shills, and eventually start cost-optimizing the identical product sku with degraded performance.
As annoying as the bait-and-switch trend became, for off-brand consumer hardware YMMV.
Good luck =)

Possible to prepare for EmuDeck before Steam Deck arrives?
You could look up their Cheat Sheet so you know what BIOS you'll need

Put BIOS for all systems in bios folder on SD card, but the Bios Checker isn't detecting them.

[MEGATHREAD] - Steam Deck All Tools/Setup Guides
INSTALLATION: To install this software go to dragoonDorise/EmuDeck: Emulator configurator for Steam Deck (github.com) or EmuDeck - Emulators on Steam Deck, SteamOS , Rog Ally and Windows to download the software. If it downloads to the downloads folder, make sure you move it to the desktop in order to run it. When it runs it may ask for a sudo password and if not then just follow the on-screen instructions it's pretty simplified so no need for additional walkthrough.

Help! I installed emudeck but I think I did something wrong
My thoughts after reading your post: 1- Go to steam desktop mode and reinstall emudeck. It will take a few minutes and you will be sure that installation is ok. 2- You can find the extension of the roms that can be read by Emulation Station in this post: https://github.com/dragoonDorise/EmuDeck as a rule of thumb older games can be left zipped while newer need to be unzipped. Good to check in any case. 3- You can follow another tutorial, but the one of retro game corps is the one I followed and it worked... Please, let us know how it goes.

Need help with Emudeck
Emudeck Cheatsheet explains which systems need bios, what the file should be named, and where to put it.
- How easy is it to emulate for a complete tech-noob?
What are some alternatives?
MediaTester - MediaTester can test any media (SD, microSD, thumb, etc) and verify it stores the expected number of bytes. The testing method is similar to h2testw but MediaTester can detect fake or defective media much faster by performing quick reads as data is written. If you buy any storage media, use MediaTester to verify it or risk losing your data.
RetroDECK - RetroDECK brings you an all-in-one sandboxed application to play your retro games (and even not-so-retro games) on Linux/SteamOS.
