QSS-M
QSS-M, a port of ID Software's original Quake, evolved from Quake 1.09 to Fitzquake, Quakespasm, Quakespasm Spiked, and now Quakespasm Spiked Multiplayer. NetQuake competitive multiplayer clients began with ProQuake, progressed to Qrack or Mark V, and arrived at QSS-M, thanks to voluntary contributions (by timbergeron)

Early 2000s Video Game Liminality
I highly recommend everyone give it a shot. The remaster has a lot going for it but to truely experience it in this way you should use a sourceport like Quakespasm. The official campaign is nice to get you used to how the game works and plays, but IMHO the real game lies within the community-made material.

Best way/source port to play these days?
There's quite a few options depending on what you want out of your engine! One of the most common and compatible source ports is QuakeSpasm, which uses FitzQuake as a base with a lot of user-friendly options both in UI and cvars.

Jazz² Resurrection v0.6.8 released (open-source engine reimplementation of Jazz Jackrabbit 2)
Jazz² Resurrection is an open-source engine reimplementation of 1998 platfomer classic Jazz Jackrabbit 2. It runs on Linux via Mono. Just like other source ports like QuakeSpasm, Yamagi Quake II, ioquake3 it requires original game data to run that can be purchased in GOG.

Found a post on here about AI upscaled textures for Quake 1, with a link to the texture pack mod in this attached article. Does anyone know how to install them? There's no readme.txt or anything. (I'm using Quakespasm btw). Thanks.
So I think for loose .PNG textures, you need to use QuakeSpasm-Spiked. DarkPlaces may work with .PNGs as well. Regular Qspsm does support external textures, but only in .TGA format and only for BSP entities.

How to fix Quakespasm-spiked not running demos
the newest version of QSS-M (dev per github commit -- https://github.com/timbergeron/QSS-M/commit/96188f4bf87785c00a72817c0baf62a253448de3) restores demo playback from id1 folder as well. But in the current release demos are stored in id1/demos for better organization purposes
