Better Shell is here: https://github.com/killdash9/better-shell . I've been happy with it for years. I have only needed term once in my career, when I was using some fancy shell programs that regular shell choked on. I don't know ansi-term. Now I just use vterm when I need to do some work on a remote server and want to bypass the system-freezing characteristics of Tramp. That is a toss-up, though, since Tramp is really marvelous except for the hanging when things have gone to sleep.
