I know this is generic, but I just got my first job offer and i'm beyond excited.
Then there's a whole galaxy of various watchdog and direct democracy projects/prototypes, like the Liquid Democracy project. Their Github page has all their projects and many of them have lots of relatively easy open issues. For example, their core library has simple open issues such as this that doesn't even really need programming skills. These sort of projects are a lot easier for novices to contribute to, since they are less mature and often have a lot of low-hanging open issues that anyone is free to fix.
