How to have 'gaps' on dwmbar
The "applets" could be added with the systray patch if you want something graphical or with external utilities like trayer or stalonetray. It can also be done using dsblocks/dwmblocks for the status which support clickability but may need more tinkering if you want to show menus.

Is there a standalone system/app indicator tray?
I used to use trayer on X11, there's this fork but can't say for sure it works on Wayland. Maybe another hack it to config yambar for all the modules you want to use, leave room to use only the tray module for waybar on your screen. And have them both startup on loading your windows manager.
