Is there a standalone system/app indicator tray?
I used to use trayer on X11, there's this fork but can't say for sure it works on Wayland. Maybe another hack it to config yambar for all the modules you want to use, leave room to use only the tray module for waybar on your screen. And have them both startup on loading your windows manager.

How to have 'gaps' on dwmbar
The "applets" could be added with the systray patch if you want something graphical or with external utilities like trayer or stalonetray. It can also be done using dsblocks/dwmblocks for the status which support clickability but may need more tinkering if you want to show menus.

Recommend a tiling windows manager
Well, here's my build of dwm that I've used daily for years, https://github.com/majamin/dwm . Change config.def.h to your liking. Then, when you are more comfortable, patch your own build. Quite rewarding.

What are some alternatives?
When comparing trayer-srg and dwm you can also consider the following projects:
stalonetray - STAnd aLONE TRAY (notification area) implementation for X11
dwmblocks - Rewrite of dwmblocks with added features including clickability, cursor hinting and color.
dsblocks - Modular status monitor for dwm written and meant to be configured in C.
Waybar - Highly customizable Wayland bar for Sway and Wlroots based compositors. :v: :tada:
electron-discord-webapp - A Discord and SpaceBar :electron:-based client implemented without Discord API.
gtk-sni-tray - A StatusNotifierHost widget written using the gtk+3 bindings for haskell provided by gi-gtk.
quicktile - Adds window-tiling hotkeys to any X11 desktop. (An analogue to WinSplit Revolution for people who don't want to use Compiz Grid)
