The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.

I use the Materialized Path approach implemented in django-treebeard, works well enough that I haven't looked for something better.

Another library to consider is Django CTE which makes it easier to do multi-table queries in a single go.

They are pretty neet, tho I myself use django-cte to do such queries.
