Did not realize that like 99% of docking stations do not support Linux....
That is exactly it, proprietary driver. I use https://github.com/AdnanHodzic/displaylink-debian with excellent results with my Pluggable brand USB dock.

DisplayLink monitor vs Ubuntu 22.04
The monitor works fine with Windows 10 after I install the drivers. With the Ubuntu, however, things do not work. I tried installing the driver suggested by ASUS specific for this model, the most recent official Display Link driver, and the community script. All have give the same result: installation is said to be successful and asks me to reboot. I reboot and connect the screen. Screen turns on and keeps black. No display is detected. In Additional Drivers there is no drivers listed.

Dual display broken after upgrade to kernel 6.0
u/marvelggg was correct the issue was DisplayLink. Unfortnuately it wasn't possible to just reinstall their driver because they are not up to date with the current Linux kernel. I used calebanthony's advice from this page to get me back on track;https://github.com/AdnanHodzic/displaylink-debian/issues/745

(The lenovo branded dock is most horrible especially when used with Linux - needs drivers to be install. https://github.com/AdnanHodzic/displaylink-debian All others just work).

USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness
I bought a DisplayLink dock for my ubuntu laptops (2015 XPS and 2021 XPS) and it doesn't really work with either. It's quite maddening.
It requires a strange driver I would've preferred to avoid. I tried a strange workaround on both and neither really works; one still doesn't display through the DisplayPort or HDMI, the other doesn't work with the M.2 2280 built into the dock.

Linux Touchpad Like MacBook Update: 2023 Progress on Smooth Scrolling
It's a little more than that, they then added subpixel and momentum scrolling support to Chrome that bypasses X11 and does something custom [1]. Integration problems like this one that require a bunch of coordination are harder to do in open source land.

ChromeOS is splitting the browser from the OS, getting more Linux-y
I'm guessing GP means natively, not in a VM. I've been super grateful for the VM-based method, but I still prefer the native experience like that provided by Crouton[1]. With Crouton being "maintenance-only" now I share GP's hope that a similar thing will be possible and easy.

Can I rigg a Chromebook to install Linux on it? Not the virtual Linux they have an option for, I want to replace Chrome OS entirely with Linux.
At any rate, you can try Breath, Crouton, Manjaro... those are three of the distros people have found success with. It all boils down to the specific hardware involved... which we know nothing about since you kept that to yourself.

when i try to install ubuntu with crouton on my hp chromebook 11 it says all these errors even though its in developer mode the first error when i type, sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -t unity, says ssh: 0: Refusing to exec /home/chronos/user/Downloads/crouton from noexec mount; see https://chromium.goo
Post in r/crouton and refer to https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton if you haven't already. However, I think it's fair to say that Crouton is now broken to the point of being effectively dead.
