Thirty Five Days of Dwarf: IT BEGINS! (10/01 @6pm ET)
My goal is to walk new players through an embark using the Dwarf Fortress Steam Release, along with an install of DF Hack. (Get DFHack on Steam or Github!) We'll have Dwarf Therapist on hand to look at dwarven details, and that covers everything except a visualizer for me. Along the way, I'll provide examples of the setup and tools I use to play Dwarf Fortress, as a guidepost for new players.

Please report any issues (or feature requests) on the DFHack GitHub issue tracker. When reporting issues, please upload a zip file of your savegame and a zip file of your mods directory to the cloud and add links to the GitHub issue. Make sure your files are downloadable by "everyone with the link". We need your savegame to reproduce the problem and test the fix, and we need your active mods so we can load your savegame. Issues with savegames and mods attached get fixed first!

Please tell me how to save this badger. A dwarf child beat it up and when I clicked on it I found out it has a personality and started crying. Please tell me how to save it. It has poor analytical skills :(

The direct memory access layer is documented through the memory structure definition files here: https://github.com/DFHack/df-structures But it's often clearer to browse the active game memory with gui/gm-editor, which visualizes the structure definitions for you.

What currently available game impresses game developers the most and why?
Depends on whether you're willing to use hacking tools or not, since, as you say, the game is not open source (I'm being paid as the game's second programmer, so my position's a bit privileged here). Hacking tools do have a lot of the memory mapped out, but there's, ah, more to it than one can get from this, obviously.

I legitimately think your teacher might just have no idea what they're doing, if you're in a basic class and this is what you're being assigned. This is the sort of thing there are entire projects built around a single program for.
