  • Failed to Install Kernel When Installing MrChromebox Audio Drivers

I have an ASUS C423N and I switched from Xubuntu to Mint XFCE. The audio wasn't working, so I tried installing the audio drivers from here. When I try installing the SOF drivers, I get "Error: Failed to Install Kernel". When I try installing the AVS drivers, it says I need to update my kernel to 6.0. The only reason I think the kernel install could be failing is that I don't have python 3.10 installed, but I don't know how to check if I do. All help appreciated.

I actually picked up a Pixelbook Go off ebay this week because I wanted a really nice quality laptop for Linux. Getting things figured out was kind of hellish (I'm working on a guide) but I was looking into Depthboot yesterday as a way to see if I could get audio working (the custom kernel seemed like it had better chances).

Ended up not working, as Depthboot requires you to build your own images and there's a problem where the builder gets stuck on the DE step (and also the github seems to imply the project might be getting sunset?)

In my experience, follow MrChromebox's firmware utility guide to set up UEFI firmware, use a recent kernel as they have good support for most chrome os devices, and for audio the absolute amazing https://github.com/WeirdTreeThing/chromebook-linux-audio solved like 3 days of headache for me with one script.

I'd highly recommend it. Picked up an i5/16GB/128GB config for ~$200 and it's hardware on par with my M1 Macbook Air, and the first x86 laptop I've owned with battery life to match, especially with Arch. Amazing value and I think my favorite linux device ever.

I agree with u/ZetaZoid and u/nelgar1260. All I would add is the need to be aware that all Skylake based Chromebooks have issues with audio in alt-OS scenarios. The stock Google firmware/OS resolves the underlying cause however if you decide to replace Chrome OS, before taking the plunge be sure to thoroughly read MrChromebox's firmware page and follow the FAQ link to the chromebook-linux-audio github.

It's been running great, actually. I'm using Fedora more than ChromeOS now, LOL. It seems to run at about the same speed (at least from what I've been noticing). Some drivers didn't work at first (ie audio and keyboard backlight), but I was able to fix the audio with WeirdTreeThing's script. I haven't gotten the backlight to work yet, however, though I've been poking it around with OpenRGB if you want to try it. Maybe you'll have more luck than me, haha.
