Have you looked at dbxfs yet? Unlike the official Dropbox client, dbxfs mounts your Dropbox account as a local folder, meaning you can save/access your files directly without having to sync anything first, so you won't be using up any additional space on your drive.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel!!!
Following fuse tutorials is really easy and should give you a framework of functions that you need to implement. Not to mention the ease of doing stuff outside a kernel context (pretty sure you can make one in python if you wanted).
