On a side-note, I use nov.el is an epub reader for Emacs. Like a terminal, Emacs is used for viewing and working with text, but it has a GUI and therefore is not limited by having to emulate a teletype terminal. As a result nov.el offers variable-width fonts and inline-images. Also it integrates with a Calibre database via calibredb.el. But for me what matters most is that I can navigate, search and copy text with keybindings that I'm used to from Emacs, e.g. useful for finding and copying quotes. But there are even less Emacs users than there are people comfortable in a terminal, so I admit that's not for everyone.

A somewhat relevant plug: for those not aware, calibredb (https://github.com/chenyanming/calibredb.el) from the same author is an excellent package if you use calibre for managing your books library.
