blastem VS mame

The libretro core seems to be outdated according to the GitHub page. It says last commit being on Jul 26, 2022. Meanwhile the standalone is Feb 20th, 2023.

BlastEm is my first reasonably complete emulator, but I had a couple of other emulation projects that didn't really go anywhere previously so you can kind of consider it the second. It took me about two months before I got things sort of working and about 11 months before my first release. It took considerably longer for things to get into reasonably good shape.

You want to use a modern and accurate emulator like BlastEm

Blastem is still under development.

Dude, Kega has almost 10 years dead, use BlastEm for Roms games and Genesis Plus GX for SegaCD games.

Of those, JELOS has the most MAME cores available: MAME2000 MAME2003(-plus) MAME2010 MAME2015 MAME (current) (which is pulled from the Libretro/Retroarch build, whose GitHub commit history indicates is up to MAME ver.251 as of this post)

The MAME bug is explained at https://github.com/libretro/mame/issues/261, FBNeo is working as expected by retroarch.

This core option was added in mame and mame2016 to avoid having to do that through mame osd (which didn't save between boots either), and i think you are right about the mame version not working properly. It doesn't surprise me, i remember helping that contributor with a few tips on retropie forum, he wanted this feature for playing cv1k games with mame2016 on his pi4, he probably never tested it thoroughly with mame.

wouldnt be surprised they are all alike https://github.com/libretro/mame/issues/261 they dont know the difference between a mirror and a rotation. What chance has it user base got.

Libretroization of mame current is quite bad, especially if you are playing vertical games (see this issue), aspect ratio is probably safe though.

What's the triggering condition for the freezing issue you mention in your PR ? As i said, the one i knew about was fixed last year (https://github.com/libretro/mame/issues/158).

So, I had to compile lr-mame manually and install it into the correct directory. Running compilation on a single core really took forever, but it eventually finished.

Also, i'd recommend using the standalone version of MAME, there are major issues with the libretro core and especially this one affecting vertical games like dkong.
