Back In Time VS syncthing-android

it is often asked by beginners how and where starting to contribute. As member of the maintenance team of Back In Time (Backup software using rsync in the back, written with Python and Qt) I would like to introduce one of our "good first issues" (#1578).

I'm member of the upstream maintenance team of Back In Time a rsync-based backup software. No one gets payed. No company behind hit. Even the maintainers and developers are volunteers.

Back In Time is a round about 15 years old backup software using rsync in the back. I'm part of the 3rd generation maintenance team there. A lot of work in investigating and fixing issues, understanding, documenting and refactoring old code.

This request is related to an Open Source project named Back In Time. Everyone there works voluntarily and unpaid.

In my own project we do it more transparent. We close if there is a good reason for it. We don't close just because no one is working on something. If there are no resources to work in it now but it seems important we keep it open until it is fixed. We do use milestones and priority labels to give the users an idea about our plans.

Most of the strings are form two past developers (the founder and the past maintainer). Since last summer we took over the project and try to clean things up. Some of the source strings just got a review from a linguist and he also mentioned about that exclamation marks. But he kind of stopped at some point because it was to much. ;)

Currently the translation is locked because of maintenance issues and an open PR offering review of original English strings.

I'm interested in that topic because I'm member of the maintenance team of Back In Time, the software discussed in that video. The version in video is 0.9, today Back In Time reached 1.3.3. Also interesting is that I'm the third generation of maintainers to that project. I'm not sure but 0.9 there was the fist maintainer and founder involved only.

We use syncthing to share files between our machines. It avoids is having to use dropbox / OneDrive etc. You just choose a folder and it automatically syncs it in the background.

Also what about syncthing[1] (for recurrent/permanent sync) and croc[2] (for one time copies) ?

I would use syncthing, which is open source at https://syncthing.net/.

After minimal setup, it just works(tm).

You have a normal directory in your filesystem, that is synced to the other peers (which you set up in the "minimal setup").

I have been using it for years, and it works well. It has no problems crossing os'es (i.e. windows -> linux, linux -> mac)

For windows I usually recommend https://github.com/canton7/SyncTrayzor, but vanilla syncthing works fine too (but don't try to mix them!)

Do consider Syncthing particularly if you are using Android. If using apple iOS you'd need the möbius sync client.

One thing that it beats the cloud / centralized sync on is because the connection is direct between devices when the initial transfer is completed the file is completely there on the other device. With a cloud type of sync you do the transfer twice. I've seen stack up on large media or with the structure of cloud services pricing making it expensive depending on how your workflow is setup with inside and outside parties. For example, Dropbox deduction from all parties' storage limits not just the sharer.

You can also point Syncthing at a local sync of Dropbox or Google drive and then forward the files to other recipients from that for some purposes.

I think sync is a non-feature, as you can just ride on your existing solution.

When I was 14 and just getting started, I used Notepad. Upgraded to Wordpad when I realized I loved putting italics in every other sentence, moved to Google Docs at around 25 when I started writing on my phone and wanted to sync with my computer, finally moved to Obsidian a few months ago (with Syncthing for syncing) when I decided I don't want to live in Google's house where they can burn my stuff down whenever they want.
