I'd suggest MicropatcherAutomater if you want a more Patched Sur-like installation. You can even through the Patched Sur post-install app and call it the same for all I care haha.

How do I update macOS in System Preferences ?
For now I am using MicropatcherAutomator v2.0 because I need support for clean install to install on different volume.

Yes, but this one (with the newest update) has a redesigned UI that is more user friendly, a post-install in recovery, works on clean installs, and hasn't had some of the weird bugs that PatchedSur has. I encourage you to try it and join the Unsupported Macs Discord server to learn more about each of them. Raspberry pi 400 alternative distro
It is based on Raspberry Pi OS, and because of that most of its components are open source. As for its own components, I was able to find source code for some of them - here is the updater for example. It's true that the site does look barebones though.
