Command to instantly refresh SLStatus once?
I use this fork of dwmblocks, which supports updating of individual blocks through signals. It's not a "batteries included" deal like SLStatus though. You have to code the blocks yourself.

dwmblocks doesn't show up anywhere
I use this version of dwmblocks https://github.com/ashish-yadav11/dwmblocks.

Joined a few days ago, so far loving it!
About Steam, I do flatpak because normally Steam gets access to my entire file system, I can isolate it with flatpak so just a pet-peeve reason really, I did it even before using Gentoo. And about dwm, thanks so much for liking it! It's still WIP so the dot files aren't properly set up yet, but here it is. My compositor is picom-jonaburg-fix and my statusbar is a slightly modified version of ashish-yadav's dwmblocks build.

Help with update signals.
Do me a favor and don't follow Luke's instructions. His programs are a pretty mess and dotfiles unnecessary big. If you want a sane fork of dwmblocks you can scroll through the suckless apps. My favorite is https://github.com/ashish-yadav11/dwmblocks . Upfront I need to warn you to read the instructions carefully because applying patches to dwm sometimes need to be applied in the right order.

How to have 'gaps' on dwmbar
The "applets" could be added with the systray patch if you want something graphical or with external utilities like trayer or stalonetray. It can also be done using dsblocks/dwmblocks for the status which support clickability but may need more tinkering if you want to show menus.

What desktop environment or rather window manager to get the most professional/geeky feel?
And unless you are on a desktop with a wired, always on connection, you might need a status bar, so you can see your battery percentage and Wi-fi connectivity. This one is good - https://github.com/ashish-yadav11/dwmblocks - however if you want to go really barebones, yet powerful, dwmstatus is the way to go.

How do you get Nerd Font or Font Awesome icons to display properly in the dwm statusbar?
It is dwmblocks, but there are several personal patches, i'm doing some refactoring for my dwm build, once it's done, i will push it to my github

Do You Use Dwmblocks/Built-in Dwm Status?
You might want to give https://github.com/ashish-yadav11/dwmblocks a try.

Is there a standalone system/app indicator tray?
I used to use trayer on X11, there's this fork but can't say for sure it works on Wayland. Maybe another hack it to config yambar for all the modules you want to use, leave room to use only the tray module for waybar on your screen. And have them both startup on loading your windows manager.
