arc-theme VS papirus-icon-theme

You can write an issue/ask a question here. It's based on the original theme, which is not active since 2017, so I guess the packages in Linux distros are built from that fork.

I have enjoyed the dark variant of the Arc Theme for years. It can be found in most distro repositories or here: https://github.com/horst3180/arc-theme

Me just being lazy instead of looking for it myself...how does this work? For example, let's say I want to use the Arc Dark theme on F36/Gnome 42. The theme claims it includes a GTK4 variant (btw, Fedora uses this fork of the Arc theme according to the rpm spec, as the original has been unmaintained for some time). How do I tell Gnome 42 libadwaita apps to use the Dark Arc theme? If it's an export line in my .profile file, then I must have done something wrong, because that didn't work for me. What is this trickery you mention, please do tell!

Did you try the arc-dark theme? It's quite popular among archlinux users, and I think it looks pretty polished. [1]

I'm no design expert, so I got nothing to say in terms of UI/UX. But it's the theme I've grown most comfortable with to use over the years. I agree with your sentiment that most themes lack attention to detail, where everything looks just more cluttered than anything else (especially when taking a look at icons, fonts etc).

Arc uses SASS to generate the actual CSS. It uses constants for colors which should be easy to replace. The only thing you need then is to build the SCSS files with a SASS compiler. Use Papirus icons. Then you can use papirus folders. Papirus-folders is a bash script that allows changing the color of folders in Papirus icon theme and its forks. There are other icon themes which allow folder colour switches. Also there is no need for an extension, says the vanilla Gnome user 😉

If you are unsure what to name the files, just check out /usr/share/icons/Adwaita and see what names it uses for the icons you wanna change. Or, if you wanna change more things - like application icons, etc - you can download a more robust icon theme like Papirus just to check the names it uses for what you wanna change.

An easier approach would be installing an icon theme like Papirus that already does it. 😉
