arc-theme VS memphis-98

You can write an issue/ask a question here. It's based on the original theme, which is not active since 2017, so I guess the packages in Linux distros are built from that fork.

Me just being lazy instead of looking for it myself...how does this work? For example, let's say I want to use the Arc Dark theme on F36/Gnome 42. The theme claims it includes a GTK4 variant (btw, Fedora uses this fork of the Arc theme according to the rpm spec, as the original has been unmaintained for some time). How do I tell Gnome 42 libadwaita apps to use the Dark Arc theme? If it's an export line in my .profile file, then I must have done something wrong, because that didn't work for me. What is this trickery you mention, please do tell!

Did you try the arc-dark theme? It's quite popular among archlinux users, and I think it looks pretty polished. [1]

I'm no design expert, so I got nothing to say in terms of UI/UX. But it's the theme I've grown most comfortable with to use over the years. I agree with your sentiment that most themes lack attention to detail, where everything looks just more cluttered than anything else (especially when taking a look at icons, fonts etc).

Arc uses SASS to generate the actual CSS. It uses constants for colors which should be easy to replace. The only thing you need then is to build the SCSS files with a SASS compiler. I actually didn't like (and still don't) Windows in any form, but the one thing I did/do like is the Windows 95/98/2000 UI. I came from an Amiga background, and even though I think of Amiga with fond memories, I thought the UI was a bit too spartan and clumsy (MUI was a step in the right direction though).

Nowadays I use Memphis-98 [0] as GUI theme (not desktop and window decorations). It's is kinda like Chicago95, but feels a bit more modern, not just a straight copy of Windows. There are some layout bugs, and some apps looks overall bad, like Firefox, Thunderbird and BDeaver. I had to manually turn off theming of DBeaver because it's basically useless with the Memphis theme.

For Qt I use the built in Windows look.
