Is there any plugin to lay out 10k (small to medium sized) images automatically in order on a large mural sized file?
Maybe you want some photomosaic software like http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/metapixel/

The first pic is a recreation of the art in the second pic using lots of screenshots from a game. Is it possible to make something like this in GIMP?
Late to this one but Gimp is maybe not the best tool. You can use Gimp to a certain extent but the result can be limited. This using the Gimp gmic plugin www.gmic.eu / 300 50x50 pix tiles cut out of the image Not really enough but: Gmic https://i.imgur.com/54XVGsn.jpg and a result: https://i.imgur.com/zHDfYR6.jpg For dedicated tools look at: For Windows http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/ For Linux https://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/metapixel/ (dependencies - some old packages need for this) For best results these need 1000's of tiles, but with the same 300 tiles using metapixel: https://i.imgur.com/poDFa2R.jpg

So ... like https://github.com/schani/metapixel or any other photomosaic program, but only one tile per pixel?
