Well, thanks to discussions in the previous thread you linked, I'm ready with a implementation that can do this input, at https://github.com/petertseng/adventofcode-rb-2021/blob/-/inter5.rb. We can't call it particularly great, since it takes about 90 seconds to find the answer, but find the answer it does, eventually.

My thoughts exactly. But after the initial dread, I just used a vector and used indexes into that as pointers. Think this is sort of a general rust pattern (https://github.com/Japanuspus/adventofcode/blob/master/2020/day23/src/main.rs).
