For a softmod, instead of using the C: drive files the guide suggests, you would use the C: drive files from Rocky5's softmodding tool. This way you are putting the softmod tool files directly onto the new hard drive. If the Insignia tool still won't launch after that (or if no update triggers), then I'd suggest nuking the save and loading in Rocky5's softmodding tool instead. Once that's done you'll be able to install and run the Insignia set up tool through the new menu system that sets up for you. If for some reason you want to revert back to stock afterwards, use Rocky5's Extras disc to do so.

It either needs to be modchipped, like u/Nucken_futz_ said, or you need to softmod the system and then use an application like Chimp 261812 to clone the hard drive and swap them over.

You can use Chimp 261812 to clone your current to a new slave (DVD drive connecter connected) hard drive. Then, lock it after cloning. Swap drives making sure to set the new drive as MASTER on the IDE bus.

Also, make sure you are using Chimp 261812, not any of the older versions.

That said, yes, you can install an SSD and have your Xbox boot into the stock MS dashboard. You can make it boot into the stock dashboard whether or not you mod it. The easiest way to pull it off is probably to clone your hard drive over to your SSD using a tool like Chimp. There's also ways of cloning/building Xbox drives using a PC.
