I want to switch to linux, but I have some questions
What headset do you have? VR works great when it works, but the protocols on Linux don't play well with all headsets. If you have a Vive, Vive Pro, or Index, it should work well with SteamVR. Otherwise, you'll have to dig around and test yourself using something like OpenHMD or more likely Monado, which both have limited device support. In my search, I came across this page, which might help you out.

Linux genuinely gives me less issues than Windows
As a rare VR on Linux user, SteamVR for Linux is in a sad state and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not extremely dedicated. The fact that it exists at all is a step up from other vendors but man is it a bad experience right now. Worse than it's been since the earliest days IMO

They are untested but should work, they use Valve's firmware. I reached out to the developers about it a while ago for this document.

With the release of the Steam deck, how good is gaming on Linux now?
Aside from the smaller list of native/supported games, here's what I've found has been tested to work.

Tags no longer register and i've finally had it with galaxy 2.0. Any recommended alternatives?
Heroic Games Launcher: Support is limited to Epic, GOG and Amazon but the advantage is that it can manage their games itself without the need of their own launchers. Doesn't have support for tags currently.

Making the switch - what are the gaps?
For "normal" games you could look yourself using ProtonDB regarding every game released on Steam and AreWeAntiCheatYet for most multiplayer games. If a game isn't available on Steam you have three possibilities. First if it's available on GOG, Epic Games or Amazon Gaming, you could use the Heroic Games Launcher. Second you could try to run the launchers through Steam itself using once again Proton. Third you could try installing it with a script or tutorial in Lutris or Bottles.

I just bought a steam deck for my 15yo’s bday present - now what?
Maybe also look into HeroicGamesLauncher and how to install it, Steam isn't the only platform for gaming and HeroicGamesLauncher help with the following platform: GoG (Good Old Games) and EGS (Epic Game Store).
- According to a survey, only 36% of PC gamers buy games at full price.
