Show HN: CLI text processing with GNU sed (eBook)
Hello!
I am pleased to announce a new version of my "CLI text processing with GNU sed" ebook. This book heavily leans on examples to present features one by one. In addition to sed commands and options, regular expressions are also discussed in detail.
Links:
* PDF/EPUB versions: https://learnbyexample.gumroad.com/l/gnu_sed (free for a few days)
* Web version: https://learnbyexample.github.io/learn_gnused/ (always free)
* Markdown source, example files, etc: https://github.com/learnbyexample/learn_gnused
* Interactive TUI app for exercises: https://github.com/learnbyexample/TUI-apps/blob/main/SedExercises
I would highly appreciate it if you'd let me know how you felt about this book. It could be anything from a simple thank you, pointing out a typo, mistakes in code snippets, which aspects of the book worked for you (or didn't!) and so on. Reader feedback is essential and especially so for self-published authors.
Happy learning :)

Learn GNU grep and ripgrep with hundreds of examples and exercises
I also wrote an interactive TUI app based on some of the exercises from the ebook. Reference solutions are provided for both GNU grep and ripgrep.

Good project to make the transition from terminal to GUI?
These days I prefer coding TUI apps using Textual (see my repo https://github.com/learnbyexample/TUI-apps for examples) since I find this framework easier to work with and I don't need full GUI features for my projects.

What are some good online resources with regex problems (and solutions)?
This year I started updating my existing books and I'm also creating interactive apps. Here's one for Python regex: https://github.com/learnbyexample/TUI-apps/blob/main/PyRegexExercises. Next is grep.

TUI app with 100+ interactive Python Regex exercises
Having an interactive program that automatically loads questions and checks the solution is wonderful to have while learning a topic. I wrote a TUI app that has beginner to advanced level exercises for Python regular expressions. There are more than 100 exercises covering both the builtin re and third-party regex modules.

How to setup Black and pre-commit in python for auto text-formatting on commit
Today we are going to look at how to setup Black (a python code formatter) and pre-commit (a package for handling git hooks in python) to automatically format you code on commit.

Embracing Modern Python for Web Development
Pre-commit hooks act as the first line of defense in maintaining code quality, seamlessly integrating with linters and code formatters. They automatically execute these tools each time a developer tries to commit code to the repository, ensuring the code adheres to the project's standards. If the hooks detect issues, the commit is paused until the issues are resolved, guaranteeing that only code meeting quality standards makes it into the repository.

A Tale of Two Kitchens - Hypermodernizing Your Python Code Base
Pre-commit Hooks: Pre-commit is a tool that can be set up to enforce coding rules and standards before you commit your changes to your code repository. This ensures that you can't even check in (commit) code that doesn't meet your standards. This allows a code reviewer to focus on the architecture of a change while not wasting time with trivial style nitpicks.

Things I just don't like about Git
Ah, fair enough!
On my team we use pre-commit[0] a lot. I guess I would define the history to be something like "has this commit ever been run through our pre-commit hooks?". If you rewrite history, you'll (usually) produce commits that have not been through pre-commit (and they've therefore dodged a lot of static checks that might catch code that wasn't working, at that point in time). That gives some manner of objectivity to the "history", although it does depend on each user having their pre-commit hooks activated in their local workspace.

Django Code Formatting and Linting Made Easy: A Step-by-Step Pre-commit Hook Tutorial
Pre-commit is a framework for managing and maintaining multi-language pre-commit hooks. It supports hooks for various programming languages. Using this framework, you only have to specify a list of hooks you want to run before every commit, and pre-commit handles the installation and execution of those hooks despite your project’s primary language.
