Should I use an R4 card for dsi or should I use cfw to download games directly on the console?
Also, I highly recommend GameYob a great GameBoy emulator for DS and 3DS. And if you share your sd card between the two, you can bring your saves and roms with you

Which of these is the best r4 for my old 3ds with custom firmware?
You will also need to test some homebrew to see if it launches too, any homebrew will work, though I'll give you some examples to try out: - DS Reader - Text reader - Gameyob - GB/C Emulator - Gbarunner2 - GBA Hypervisor - Try GBARunner2_arm9dldi_ds.nds first and if it doesn't work, use GBARunner2_arm7dldi_ds.nds

DSis can run homebrew. I'm personally a fan of gameboy because it can recreate SuperGame Boy features.
