I am an experienced software engineer with a career spanning over a decade, having worked in leadership positions on commercial projects as well as hybrid commercial/open source projects, in fields such as consumer gaming, cloud storage, and drone control systems.

In the past few years I have worked on real-time low latency video streaming systems on both mobile and embedded linux platforms, and designed and implemented a commercial end-to-end encrypted cloud storage system for the EU market.

For most of my career I have contributed to and at times maintained open source projects, such as Arch Linux ARM where I maintained the Beaglebone Black platform for several years. I was also the maintainer of the OpenHD project[1], where I reorganized and modernized the development and release process, and as the lead developer I created a cross platform touchscreen drone controller called QOpenHD[2].

I have real world experience deploying applications on multiple embedded linux platforms, Mac and Windows systems programming (C, C++, and Rust), iOS/iPad and macOS application development (Obj-C, Obj-C++, Qt, Swift, Rust), and Windows desktop application development (C# .NET/WPF, Qt, Rust).

I have years of experience using the Qt framework on desktop, mobile, and embedded linux platforms, and have in-depth knowledge of low level platform-specific rendering and video handling APIs (OpenGL, Linux v4l2/dmabuf, GL texture/buffer sharing).

I've also designed my own FPGA IP cores for parts from most of the major manufacturers, including Xilinx, Intel/Altera, and Lattice, experience which gives me a much better understanding of how the hardware we run our software on actually works in practice.

Currently I am working on an animal safety monitoring system (embedded linux, Qt framework, C++ and Rust) designed to detect hazardous conditions and events that could be life threatening for a particular species (such as a baby tortoise flipping over directly under a heat lamp), using a combination of habitat sensors, thermal imaging, and computer vision. It integrates with common commercial streaming and notification systems such as the YouTube Live streaming platform, Twilio SMS notifications, and Apple HomeKit.

I've landed a job using this posting last year, unfortunately it was a startup trying a last-minute pivot, it didn't launch to an immediate success, as they hoped, so they decided to close shop. It lasted only 3 months so I'm in the market again.

If you'd like to see some of my current work, I'm launching an OS project to make AWS diagrams purely from Terraform: https://github.com/fmalk/terraform-plantuml . No changes to files or configs are needed. Still in alpha stages but it currently maps buckets, users, VPCs, subnets and EC2 instances.

I'm a software engineer focused on leadership and process automation. For the past 12 years I have been leading teams, designing solutions & architectures. I mostly work on backend with APIs, message systems built on NodeJS & AWS but I keep in touch with React web & mobile. Love teaching juniors and coding best practices. I'm out of practice with C# but used to love .NET.

My immediate family is planning a move to England so I'm open to it as well.
