Thinking about a MISTer to replace my Pi3 in my mame arcade cabinet. I know very little to nothing about them. Can they be set up to silent boot?
An alternative to brook boards there is GP2040 running off an inexpensive Pi Pico. There's even a PCB with compatible pinout: https://github.com/FeralAI/PicoFightingBoard

Made my first custom PCB. I present you the Pico Fighting Board!
If you're just looking to get the board produced you can download the files at https://github.com/FeralAI/PicoFightingBoard/tree/main/boards/v1.0/outputs. The zip file contains the gerber and drill files, the PicoFightingBoard_BOM.csv is the bill of materials for SMT assembly, and the PicoFightingBoard-top-pos.csv is the component layout file for SMT assembly. These are the 3 files JLCPCB needed for production.

Made my first custom PCB. I present you the Pico Fighting Board!
Been working on various controller firmware for a while now (Fightboard, vsFIGHTER, GP2040 firmware for OSFRD) and decided to finally learn something about designing my own boards.

Just enjoying the fruits of our labor...native Switch support for the vsFIGHTER!
I don't know a whole lot about getting the hardware produced, but the source files for the hardware are available at https://github.com/LeafCutterLabs/vsFIGHTER. Once you have the parts produced the assembly is quite easy. Then you'll just want to flash the latest firmware package from https://github.com/FeralAI/vsFIGHTER-Firmware/releases and you're good to go.
What are some alternatives?
GP2040 - Gamepad firmware for Raspberry Pi Pico and other RP2040 microcontrollers supporting Nintendo Switch, XInput and DirectInput

FightboardHybrid - Custom firmware for the Fightboard and Fightboard MX by thnikk, supporting XInput and Nintendo Switch
GP2040-CE - Gamepad firmware for Raspberry Pi Pico and other RP2040 microcontrollers supporting Nintendo Switch, XInput and DirectInput
DaemonBite-Arcade-Encoder - An arcade controller project for the MiSTer FPGA project and any other device accepting USB HID joysticks. Up to 12 buttons are supported. Can also be used to create NeoGeo/Atari/Commodore/Amiga controller to USB adapters.
