I made a fork of Phil (a free web crossword maker) with more features
Perhaps many of you know about the great free web crossword maker Phil. When I came across it last year, I loved it and tinkered with adding some more features to it. I never shared it at the time, but I thought that the new features might be useful enough that some might like to know about it, so here's a post now. Plus, I'm thinking about adding some more to it, and I'd be curious to hear what anyone's desires for potential additional features might be.

A tool for making crosswords
Just FYI, Exet does a good job with this, and has lots of other functions useful for filling in the grid.
-
Just found the article "Pinpointing Letters" in Word Ways, which has cryptic-style phrases for all letters (e.g. 'can opener' for C). Might be useful for clue writers.
Exet has a boatload of resources including some great lists of indicators.

The next AOTW Grid…
None of it is computer “generated” per se, but I do use software – mostly Exet now – to assist in selecting/creating the grid and trying to ensure each entry has at least two options. I also keep track of all the previous grids’ letter combinations, to try avoiding repeats. That last part has become increasingly difficult, though, so I will probably have to limit how far I track back in future.
