PS2Ident is an identification tool that allows dumps of a PlayStation 2 console's ROM chips and MECHACON NVRAM to be made. It will also gather data from the console (by ps2homebrew)

My PS2 died on me so I fulfilled a childhood dream and replaced it with the Sliver edition. She’s a beaut.
FreeDVDBoot works on SCPH-90000 series. Go to this link and follow the instructions under "Easy setup for all PS2 Slim consoles / Bravia TV". You should boot to homebrew uLaunchELF. If this works, then your PS2 laser can read burned media AND you can use uLaunchELF to run ps2ident or the FMCB installer off of a flash drive. PS2Ident would tell you whether your BIOS is 2.20 (FMCB will work) or 2.30 (FMCB will not). Fortuna can be used on 2.30 versions (google FunTuna).

Sometimes, Sony makes hardware revisions without changing the chip implementation numbers as well, hence why chip identification may be inaccurate. The chip and version IDs are, however, accurate since they are taken directly from the hardware. https://github.com/ps2homebrew/PS2Ident

Anyone still use their PS2 to watch movies?
SMS does not play DVD video discs, although it can recognize a set of divx/xvid files written on a DVD-Video filesystem. Here's SMS capabilities. The manual is on the web archive here.
