Ask HN: FFmpeg real-time desktop streaming

OME is a RTMP server for sub-second WebRTP streaming. Profiles allow for specific encodes if needed. I have a repository hosting an exemplary configuration and a frontend using their player .
Another server is SRS , but IMO it is more difficult to use, lacks features and the delay is about 1-3s — it requires far less bandwidth though.
Looking for self hosted screen sharing/streaming solution

My solution is cobbled together from OvenMediaEngine and OvenPlayer, which gives me about 250ms of latency when streaming. I have the whole thing behind a reverse proxy that uses Discord for forward auth, and then I have a list of discord user names that are allowed in. Streaming is controlled by a normal stream key rather than OAuth. It's very "batteries not included" though.

[Use Case] The third use case of OvenMediaEngine: IoTcube Conference 2021 ( Sep 9, 2021)

The conference organizer's requirements could be solved very simply with OvenMediaEngine (OME). They wanted to stream with sub-second latency because of smooth communication between presenters and attendees during live streaming. We applied OME as the stream server and OvenPlayer as the player to support a successful conference. That’s it.

Failed trying to play OvenMediaEngine's WebRTC? (Of course it fails with VLC, because VLC does not support WebRTC) Easy to play with OvenPlayer by just following the Getting-started documentation. https://airensoft.gitbook.io/ovenmediaengine/getting-started The forum is also very active as shown below. https://github.com/AirenSoft/OvenMediaEngine/issues
Question about self-hosting OvenMediaEngine on my local network with Docker? Docker = Confusing
2 projects | reddit.com/r/linuxquestions | 18 Jun 2021
Hello! I am trying to self-host an OvenMediaEngine server with Docker and I'm quite stuck. I haven't used Docker before and it's very confusing to me. So far I've ran the second Docker command from https://github.com/AirenSoft/OvenMediaEngine because I would like to later change some of the config files in the future. I think the server itself is up and running because when I send an RTMP stream to the server, OBS shows that it's connected and data is being sent to it. I've opened up the ports on my network and the firewall of the second computer I am hosting this server from and I'm using a second computer for the OBS stream.2 projects | reddit.com/r/linuxquestions | 18 Jun 2021
If you have any questions while using OvenMediaEngine, please use AirenSoft's GitHub Issues. It will give you the fastest answer!

I'm guessing you're trying to stream via steam link? You could try other remote desktop tools such as parsec or sunshine & moonlight.

If you don't have an Nvidia GPU (or have monitor numbering issues) you can run https://github.com/loki-47-6F-64/sunshine as the server on your PC instead of relying on GeForce Experience.

There is an open source project called Sunshine that lets you stream to Moonlight clients from any GPU https://github.com/loki-47-6F-64/sunshine

Edit: In my case I have problems using Moonlight with my laptop, the controllers of the Rp3 doesn't work, so I needed to use another version of Moonlight a bit out dated, but it worked perfectly. If you have an AMD GPU, I recommend the LizardByte version, it's the most updated and stable, but if it doesn't work with your RP3, Use the one made by Loki-47 and follow the instructions and install the VigemBus (this will fix the problem).
Why is there not a good Linux virtual or remote desktop?

The best option for performance is almost certainly sunshine on Linux and Moonlight on Windows. The only caveat is you need an NVIDIA GPU on Linux https://github.com/loki-47-6F-64/sunshine.

If you have an NVIDIA GPU and you haven't tried Moonlight, you aren't using the Deck to its greatest potential.

I'm a huge Moonlight fan so this is an issue for me as well, but just an FYI, a lot of people have good luck with Sunshine https://github.com/loki-47-6F-64/sunshine - which is a Moonlight compatible host that uses ffmpeg (and works w/ AMD cards).
I'm in the market for an upgrade and will wait until Nov 3 to see what RDNA3 brings to see if it's worth paying for a new card vs last-gen used card pricing.

If you have an AMD card or monitor port numbering issues you can set up Sunshine as the host instead of enabling Nvidia Game Stream.
