The behavior you are observing is not intentional and is related to a rendering bug specific to AMD graphic cards. At least it's already reported! https://github.com/OpenSpace/OpenSpace/issues/1145

Yeah. That all seems doable. I used https://github.com/onekiloparsec/SwiftAA to help me set locations of celestial objects for https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/augmented-reality-solar-system/id1262856697?mt=8 so it is fully possible to do what you want.
