Pros and cons CAM software (for Stepcraft D2/420)
That’s not the CAM software, it’s just the control system for the machine. It allows you to get the machine setup and then you send the gcode file. Don’t go with the LPT port, that’s something that has not been on a PC in 20 years unless it also includes a USB port. Both of the other options are paid and based on what I see from the website look like they were written in 1997. If you have an option to just get a USB port, then do that and use one of the free software. I personally like openbuilds control but UGS will work. You should also be able to use things like easel or carbide create which are simpler software that have both design and control and are good for beginners.

Hobbyist CNC router, what to buy? (~$1000)
Great choice the 1500x1500, the structure helds well the size. I can't aford bigger than 600 for the space I have avaiable. I have the OpenBuilds X32 control system. For grbl it's great. Easy, mostly plug and play, strong, very good g-code sender https://software.openbuilds.com/, fantastic comunity that can help you with anything, really. Have a look, it's worth spend some time on their site exploring the forums and documentation. For the rest, talk with Marvin, I think the owner, thru the Yuyong Industry site and tell him what you wish. He is nice and give you the prices step by step. You can literally make it tailored as you wish. Great to know someone that will have the same machine!! A lot to talk about....

What software for Roland Modela MDX-40?
Based on the manuals on the product page here it looks like it has a USB connection and uses gcode which is standard for most CNC today. Go get openbuilds control software and see if it works. If not, You can very likely swap out the control board for something newer which might be plug and play or you would have to swap out some electrical connectors.

Inexpensive cnc software for beginners?
There’s a few options for cheap/free software, some by hardware vendors some open source. In the past I’ve used Carbide Create and Inventibles easel to generate GCode and Openbuilds control (I don’t think you need to have a Shapeoko/Xcarve, at least I didn’t a few years ago). Openbuilds have a free CAM package too which you can use.

I got a free desktop cnc router
We can't do much without pictures. It's very likely a grbl controlled machine, so forget about mach3. You can use Universal Gcode Sender (UGS) or Openbuilds control software to test it.
- What's the best route for someone wanting to dabble in CNC hobby projects?
