    So in short, you should understand how a CPU (the simpler the better, for example the Z80 ) and computer architecture works (again, trying to do it with the simplest architecture that you can), then how does a programming language works and how it is compiled into CPU code and so on, if you want complexity you can find it the difficult thing is finding the simple enough sources that make understanding the basis feasible. It's not as simple as reading the wiki page, it's not easy to get all that in the head, the best way to learn is by doing and it will take time, so patience.
