MaplePad – RP2040 Dreamcast controller, VMU, and Purupuru (rumble pack) emulator
https://github.com/mackieks/MaplePad/blob/main/src/maple.pio
The cycle accurate assembly language has enabled a number of timing sensitive FIFO data processes. What had to be done with FPGA's before has some limited support with PIO. I hope RPI increases the number of instructions and simultaneous running PIO machines in the future.

Any tips on installing a VMU internally?
However if you're really sold on the idea you should use something like Maplepad instead of a stock VMU: https://github.com/mackieks/MaplePad

Do I have any options for SD/USB/HDD loading of games without removing my optical drive?
DreamShell is still in active development (there were commits pushed to its repository on GitHub three days ago). The full package was last posted to the website in 2016 if that's what you're thinking of, but updates have been published on that site's forum too.

Where can I find the files needed to Run the Dreamshell SD Card?
Formal releases are also available on GitHub: https://github.com/DC-SWAT/DreamShell

Purchased a Dreamshell CD and SD Card adapter from Kaico. I am using a 128gb extreme pro SanDisk SD card. I formatted it to Fat32 and install the DS files into the root of folder. Dreamshell still cannot find SD card on bootup
Formatted it to fat32 with 32K cluster size, then I put the Dreamshell files in root of the SD card. (https://github.com/DC-SWAT/DreamShell/releases/tag/V4.0) *I made a goof in my first comment and implied you needed to put retrodream's files on the sd card, but they share DS' files.
- DC-Swat has implemented Bitcoin mining on Dreamshell???

Getting DreamShell and MODE working Together
Populate the SDCard with the latest release (at the time of the writing it was v4.0.0 from the DCSWAT github) placing the contents of the DS.zip file into the root. of the SDCard. Here's a link to the version I used - https://github.com/DC-SWAT/DreamShell/releases/download/V4.0/DS.zip
