What's the lowdown on streaming video files? format, settings, apps etc?
Any good video player will suffice. Nova Video Player will pull metadata from tmdb etc. if you want and has trakt support if you need it. MX Player should work fine if you just want to browse the content on the drive and play. If you need DTS/AC3 support in MX Player, use this codec pack with it: https://github.com/USBhost/MX_FFmpeg

Set Custom Codec in MX Player TV
I downloaded the codec mx_aio.zip from here: https://github.com/USBhost/MX_FFmpeg/releases. But when I tried to set the codec from mx player, it doesn't show the zip file so I can't set it as the custom codec.

jellyfin-uwp just got a PR, so that looks somewhat bright. They're always looking for contributers tho.
- Suggestion: On Xbox and Windows use Videotape Media Player, it works flawessly with jellyfin!
- Plex just convinced me to move JellyFin from backup to primary media streamer
