The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Wildest ideas to backup / store seed phrase?
Found a Python implementation https://github.com/cakenggt/Library-Of-Pybel

A long dive into the algorithm, some math, stupid big numbers, a bit of philosophy, and a dash of critique. From a programmer nerds perspective.
Note that this whole step isn't necessarily needed. A script described as the "python implementation of the webpage" describes how it takes random values, and fills wall (1-4), shelf (1-5), volume (01-32), and page (001-420). These values are just chosen at random. So lets say we have the values Wall 2 - Shelf 3 - Volume 7 - Page 133.

Does the library of babel actually have more books than it claims?
The same book can be found in multiple hexes, that is because when the calculation is done for each page, if the resulting string is smaller than 3239, then it is padded with random characters, or if its bigger than that, it is clipped to 3239. At least that's how it works on the github page, but even if it doesn't work that way on the site, a similar thing takes place probably, i.e. a book can be found in many different hexes.

Ways to recover if the library goes down?
This python implementation says the addresses and text will not be the same as the javascript version, so I imagine the libraryofbabel.info one would differ as well. That's as far as I got, honestly, as it sounded like any individually hosted instance would be unique.

How to fit any dataset with a single parameter
Hypothetically you could achieve something similar using this[1]. Note the word "hypothetically".

How to prove that the library is real?
https://github.com/cakenggt/Library-Of-Pybel found this thank you.

Test
You can go to github and check it yourself. Though the code is not the prettiest of all, it seems legit.

Update on getting the library back online
I'm not really working on expanding the site right now but I hope it inspires other people to create their own permutational projects - the code for the image archives is on my github if you want to try to modify it: https://github.com/librarianofbabel/libraryofbabel.info-algo

Anyone know where I can find out about the code behind the project?
no, that is a clone. The original thing's algorithm is here: https://github.com/librarianofbabel/libraryofbabel.info-algo

How does the library's algorithm work?
I've been doing research into the library's algorithm and I've only found a description of it made on the github page for the algorithm: https://github.com/librarianofbabel/libraryofbabel.info-algo

How can I run babel image archives locally for my image recognition program?
I'm new to the programming (I've learned basics of Python and OpenCV over a week only to write this program). I've seen the GitHub page for library of babel but was unable to grasp what I need to run the source code locally and connect to my program.
