Looking at LEDMatrix.cpp indicates you should able to address a single led with leds(i), i.e. use parentheses rather than square brackets.

Any good step by step matrix tutorial?
Try looking at https://github.com/Paul47/LEDMatrix_22/wiki its hardly a tutorial, but there are a lot of examples, and even I have managed to get most of them up and running.

LED Matrix drawline issue
My new library https://github.com/Paul47/LEDMatrix_22 is an update and expansion of previous LEDMatrix libraries. It has a much improved drawPixel which handles rotations. Lots of added functions for 24 bit bitmaps, very large matrices using FastLED controllers. Please try it or take out whatever functionality you need. An extensive wiki is included.
