Brogue Lite is now up-to-date with CE 1.11.1, if you wanna try it.
Also, if you wanna try something really funky, I'm testing out a scoring system overhaul in the branch feature/fixing-gold.

I don't think I take a big risk saying that the CE (Community Edition) would be the most popular. But I see frequent mention of Rapid Brogue too.

Which are the best variants/forks for Brogue?
Check out RapidBrogue -- nowadays I prefer it over the classic (including the CE version which is recommended over Pender's original because of bugfixes and smart adjustments). It gives a much more condensed experience which at first will feel terribly scary, overwhelming and unfair, but because it's so fast, starting a new adventure doesn't feel like you've wasted your time earlier.

Has anyone achieved mastery in Rapid Brogue? How?
I have now ascended several times in Rapid Brogue, a lot of time with 7--9 lumenstones, but never ventured beyond level 7 because depth 8 seems insane already, and I dare not even guess what dwells below that. :)
