Yes, bustedlogic version works with moonraker. The run.py goes to /home/pi/DWIN_T5UIC1_LCD and you have to be in that directory tou run it. Putty works. This fork explains it little better https://github.com/GalvanicGlaze/DWIN_T5UIC1_LCD/wiki, but make sure to close bustedlogic git.

cannot resume from original Ender 3 S1 display. other controls work fine.

Finally moved to klipper + fluiddpi and was able to reuse the stock LCD..
Bit of work - but so far seems like its worth it - cleaner faster prints. To connect the stock LCD to the rpi - see here. Hacked an enclosure together to keep the rpi and lcd all in one box.

Extruder Stepper Driver Dead? Info in comments
I came to the same conclusion - found the e3 mini 3.0 on Aliexpress for right at $40, so I lumped in a BLTouch for $9 with the savings. That's a pretty sweet deal on the board + screen combo though. I'll see if I can get the original LCD to work with this by running through the RPi on Klipper - https://github.com/bustedlogic/DWIN_T5UIC1_LCD
