Ask HN: Nobody interested an open hardware iPod Nano?
So here is the thing: The iPod Nano 7g is from 2012. I've seen many people designing custom PCBs and releasing Kickstarter projects for custom audio players[5] or game handhelds[6]. I know Rockbox (which is great, but its lacks support for Wifi and Bluetooth AFAIK and just does not compete with the UX of iPod's audio book features in my opinion) and iPod Linux. 10 years ago someone even reverse engineered the iPod Nano 6g display[3].
Although I'm not skilled enough in PCB-Design, after some research I found the Lilygo T-Display S3 Pro[4] based on ESP32 S3, which would be the size, but lacks audio and OS. There is also the Mango PI CyberPad[7], which looked interesting, but maybe is already too clunky.
Programming wise, LVGL[8] may be a good framework to develop a modern and efficient UI - at least it looks promising.
So, why is nobody interested in recreating an iPod nano like device? It should be doable with modern tech, but Phones have completely taken over the marked...

How to capitalize on my skills/hobby achievement(s) ?
I have checked the FunKey project to have a more complete design, their stuff is awesome, and documentation insane, I think I will make a donation since they helped me so much.

Ask HN: Funkey S – open hardware / firmware portable device, project ideas?
I thought with some modifications (touchscreen, audio jack) it might be possible to create a small, affordable and hackable replacement of my iPod nano (see my github issue[5]).
So I would like to Ask HN:
- What would you think of a retro portable audio player mod?
- What other interesting projects could you think of for this?

I'm in my 40's and play on this all the time in public Funkey S

Mobile gaming perfection
For actually playable gaming, consider the Pocket Sprite, but for GOD tier mini-gaming, the Funkey S is just out of this world. Playstation emulation (and many others) in keyring size. Just insane.

RG Nano custom firmware
I was running into some choppiness issues on pretty much any system (yes, even Gameboy) with my RG Nano even with the latest firmware and found a FunKey OS custom firmware which has RG Nano support and fixed the issue! DrUm78's Custom OS has made it so much better to play and games seem to be silky smooth now - even PS1! PLUS the added bonus of a favorites option per system. Also, headphones via the dongle still work as well.
-
DrUm78's custom OS (60Hz) for the RG Nano TEST VERSION. Games run really smoothly, and a "favourites" playlist is available for each system/group! (audio through USB-C does not seem to work, as well as RTC or real-time clock)
Seems to be a version from this release in the url below. Check it out reading about the shortcut keys, all details on improvements made by DrUm78 etc. (this one specifically does NOT work on RG Nano directly, as is stated on the page itself): https://github.com/DrUm78/FunKey-OS/releases/tag/FunKey-OS-DrUm78

Added the Funkey and Powkiddy Q36 Mini to my small hand held collection today.
A 60hz custom firmware was recently released that is the preferred firmware: https://github.com/DrUm78/FunKey-OS/releases

Problem with megadrive games.
As Even-Bad4105 stated, if your not on DrUm78's custom firmware, now is a good time to update, click HERE for more info on this custom firmware and the files needed for the upgrade.

Tonight's newest drug of choice, the Powkiddy Q36.

Is there a way to display PS1 bios on game startup?
If you want the PS1 bios startup intro, there is way, but before I go on, if you haven't already done so, I HIGHLY recommend you upgrade to DrUm78's latest custom OS, it brings new features, improvements and bugfixes, the biggest feature is the screen's 60hz refresh rate, to date, the screen was only running at 50hz. Grab the latest custom OS HERE, ignore this have you already upgraded.
-
Pokémon Mini
Another method is to use PicoArch and using the pokemini_libretro.so core, if your using DrUm78's latest custom OS (Here), if not, then I HIGHLY recommend you should! You can use PicoArch on the RetroFE frontend instead of Gmenu2x if that's what you prefer, the custom OS doesn't come with the core files needed, but you can grab them HERE. the cores link provided was shared by neonloop over on the Funkey S discord server.
