can't figure out how to use IRAM_ATTR
There's no mention of IRAM_ATTR in https://github.com/espressif/ESP8266_NONOS_SDK, guess you'll have to add your own __attribute__((section(…))) definition ;)

Now the issue arises. I searched for an appropriate firmware update on the net and found several, mainly in a GitHub repository there: https://github.com/Edragon/esp_firmware
