[Discussion] Python: GUI library that works well with OpenCV?
Possibly, it's possible with Dear PyGui (available under an MIT license). See this Youtube tutorial and Github. Here is another example of video (at lower resolution) with Dear PyGui.

DearPyGui apps make no window, have no error.
Thanks! I took a look at the draw items example. It seems some code is missing. Here's a working version of that code. You can probably use the same approach to fix the other examples. Another good source of information is the built in demo of Dear PyGui. If you have more questions, the most active community is on Discord (see the link up top or in the side bar of this Reddit page).

Any advise to getting started with creating a Python program with a GUI?

the new drawing API
More generally, I can't see any examples of sensible widget/window sizing or resizing anywhere in the available examples. Mostly sizes are given as explicit pixel width/height. Is there even a simple way to modify eg. this example so that the main window fits snugly around its content?

TAP ADQL sandbox by retifrav (made with Dear PyGui)
TAP ADQL Sandbox is an application for executing ADQL queries via TAP interface of various data sources, such as astronomical databases. TAP stands for Table Access Protocol, which is a way to query data from a database. ADQL stands for Astronomical Data Query Language and it is very similar to SQL, just with extended functionality for performing various operations on the data, such as geometrical functions. Essentially, it's a GUI for PyVO. The idea is that one can quickly run and test ADQL queries using this application and then add the final query to an application or notebook. This would be of interest to planetary scientists and astronomers, as most astronomical databases expose their data via TAP interface. The source code is available in the Github repository.
