Microcontroller: Arduino pro micro clone. Sells for peanuts on Ali Express. I have no coding experiennowledge. I tried to use this guide, but it only made the controller show up as a generic controller on windows/Linux. SF6 Didn't recognise the controller. So I programmed the Arduino as a keyboard and now it works fine on PC and Steam Deck.

I've had a great experience with Arduino Pro Micro's running the DaemonBite firmware, and the RPi Pico GP2040 firmware should be similarly great. Both have extremely low latency. The Brook Universal board is another good one. Other than that, I usually just use either a DualShock 3 pad over USB or a wired 360 pad. I also like the iBuffalo SNES pad and Logitech Precision pads.

The NEO2USB is just an Arduino running the DaemonBite firmware. If you (or someone you know) can do basic soldering and can follow a tutorial for loading code onto an Arduino you can DIY an identical adaptor for about a third of the price of the Neo2SD. If you can get access to a 3D printer there are also case designs available for free.

If you can solder (or know someone who can), you could swap out the usb encoder for a Daemonbite and that would give you less than 1ms of input latency.

I had one of those pcbs, the input lag is bad and inconsistent, the build quality it's very cheap, and has no xinput support... Nowadays are better alternatives like Brook Zero-Pi, Tachyon PCB, or DIY stuff like GP2040-CE ( https://github.com/OpenStickFoundation/GP2040-CE ) or DaemonBite ( https://github.com/MickGyver/DaemonBite-Arcade-Encoder )

Been discovering cool things the community has come up with like the S-video cores (https://github.com/MikeS11/MiSTerFPGA_YC_Encoder), custom boot screens for some cores (https://github.com/uberyoji/mister-boot-roms), or the SAM script (https://github.com/mrchrisster/MiSTer_SAM). Was wondering if anyone wanted to shout out any other cool downloadables or side projects that aren't available through the main Update or Update All scripts.

The MiSTer may be better gameplay wise because of the input latency the interface is far more simpler and barebones but works. You can boot straight to a core but it may show a loading screen for a second or two you can power down and shutdown power without any problems. MiSTer is more like an appliance, the Pi is a mini computer and far more prone to corruption on power shutoff. That being said MiSTer does have the SAM attract mode script and MiSTer can be controlled by your smartphones.. I would say with the NeoGeo support, CPS 1-2 and CAVE not to mention PS1 MiSTer is already awesome. TMNT and Mortal Kombat are both being worked on not to mention Saturn support as well. To my knowledge no one has ever regretted getting a MiSTer. All it has done has become more useful and more valuable. I made a daemonbite arcade stick with a real coin mech and it is awesome and practically lagless on the MiSTer. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I think it's possible for someone to write a 3rd-party frontend, but the mainline MiSTer devs don't seem interested in it themselves. There's a 3rd-party attract mode implementation, but I don't know of one for core/ROM selection yet: https://github.com/mrchrisster/MiSTer_SAM
