You might be able to upgrade to 1.14d (assuming you want to play multiplayer) by copying these files into your Diablo II folder.

Also, if you you just want widescreen I highly recommend using SGD2FreeRes instead.

I like SGD2FreeRes for setting the resolution to 1068x600. It's the closest you can get to the native 800x600 while still being 16:9 aspect ratio.
