Should I learn coding (python, etc) to help me in mechanical engineering?
Julia and Octave are also a great open-source alternatives if you can't afford Matlab, Octave uses the same syntax as Matlab but unfortunately isn't nearly as powerful. But Julia has a really rich and growing environment and provides really good performance, see theses benchmarks
