Apple Intentionally Disabled HiDPI on M1 Macs to Push 4K Monitors Sales
I've had great results with BetterDummy[0] for my M1 make with a non-4K external monitor.
It's free and open source with an optional Pro version. I've been using it longer than the Pro version has been around, so I'm not familiar with what advantages it may have over the free version.

MacOS Sonoma on Ryzen 7 7700X and RX 6800
Got MacOS already on my old PC but upgraded and had to install from scratch. After some problems it's now working flawlessly. Even my 1440p 165Hz Monitor works great (Had to use this: https://github.com/xzhih/one-key-hidpi/blob/master/README.md to get proper scaling)

Help everything on my computer is super small after I updated it.
You probably have a machine with a Retina display but it doesn’t see it as such. You could try this script and see if it fixes it. If not you’ll have to reinstall your OS.

Upgraded from Big Sur to Ventura on T480s
I used this https://github.com/xzhih/one-key-hidpi to enable display scaling than just the lowering resolution to get larger text and other elements.
