    I think anki is still probably the way to go. It doesn't store your cards in plain text, they're in a sqlite database instead. I use ankipandas[0] to read, manipulate and analyze my cards though.

    Hi! My name is Eddie and I recently created an add-on to help users collaborate on anki decks more easily called AnkiSync. Essentially, people can contribute suggested edits to cards and moderators can approve them. Once approved, anyone subscribed to the deck can "sync" to update their cards on the local client. It is entirely free (although has a centralized server which isn't ideal but it provides a better user experience vs CrowdAnki). As this is my first project using python (im a resident doc so not my main field of expertise), the code is on the rougher side but it can be found here (https://github.com/husarcik/ankisync-add-on). If anyone has suggestions on improving the add-on or just the code base in general, I'd love your help!
