Top 22 Plaintext Open-Source Projects

  • markor

Text editor - Notes & ToDo (for Android) - Markdown, todo.txt, plaintext, math, ..

  • Project mention: A structured note-taking app for personal use | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-12-21

Just curious, any reason you're using TMarkor instead of Markor? (https://github.com/gsantner/markor/ , https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.gsantner.m...)

Only asking since this was also the editor I ended up settling on in Android, but it seems like TMarkor is just a repackaging of Markor without any references to its forked(?) source.

My requirement was that the repo had to be open source so that I could audit the repo and compile the APK from source, as well as potentially fork it for personal modifications if needed.

  • hledger

Robust, fast, intuitive plain text accounting tool with CLI, TUI and web interfaces.

  • Project mention: Double-Entry Bookkeeping as a Directed Graph | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-10

I'm surprised that there is no mentions of a great hacker-friendly plain-text accounting software called `ledger` https://ledger-cli.org/ in this thread. It has amazing documentation when it comes to understanding basic principles of double-entry bookkeeping and goes through many typical situations and usecases. There are also several forks, most popular and advanced is `hledger` https://hledger.org/ (h is for Haskell), which provides some neat features out of the box, such as a simple web interface. All of them are very primitive compared to "professional" accounting software, but in return it offers great opportunities for hacking around while ensuring validity of your books.

  • Project mention: Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use? | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-12-12

I came up with a file format for time-tracking, which lets me store the data in plain-text files in a human-friendly notation. I also built a corresponding CLI tool for evaluating the files on the terminal.

I’ve been using it almost daily for the past couple of years, and so far it has served me quite well.

  • Project mention: My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-02-19

I love the idea of using plain text files for note taking and task tracking. As others have commented on specific tools and workflows that make this easy for them to stick with, I thought I'd add mine. I use textnote [0], which is a tool I built for exactly this workflow but is hopefully flexible enough to accommodate many of the similar processes mentioned here. It simply opens a plain text file in your terminal and provides lightweight tooling for tracking by date and rolling up previous notes into archives if desired.

Thanks for opening another great discussion of plain text note taking as a productivity tool!

  • Project mention: How to draw beautiful software architecture diagrams | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-10-27

One of the things I recommend to the startups I advise is to include documentation within the repository. I always try to have a /doc directory which includes Markdown (I like using [1] self rendering markdown pages) and MermaidJS (For which I also created a dumb self rendering script [2]).

That way Merge Requests can be blocked for lack of documentation, or lack of documentation update.

MermaidJS have been a godsend for documentation.
