You can sign up for a last.fm account, and then track your listening history (listens are called scrobbles on last.fm) by installing apps on the devices you use to listen to music: - Listening on the computer? Use Web Scrobbler for Chrome, Web Scrobbler for Firefox or YouTube Music Desktop (which has native last.fm support you can enable in settings, be warned it is a tad unreliable though) - Listening on Android? Use Pano Scrobbler (recommended, free, has a premium version though), Finale or Scroball - Heard something on the radio / somewhere else? You can log it manually using Open Scrobbler

I have paid for free software. FairEmail is a great example— I could fork it and remove the pay barrier, but then there's no guarantee I'd be able to keep using it. Shuttle is another example. Neovim a third.

You can find some ways to kind of hack something together. It's not as convenient as a ready-made consumer product, but you can get a Raspberry Pi and install something like Volumio on it. (I haven't personally used Volumio, so that's just an example more than a recommendation, although it's probably good.)
