JPL Open Source Rover: https://github.com/nasa-jpl/open-source-rover. I've just ordered the parts and am going to build it with my son over the course of several months. I've started creating better build instructions for the mechanical assemblies, making them more like Technic LEGO instructions so he can work on it independently at times (he's good with Technic LEGO).

Project mention: Sovereign Tech Fund to Invest €686,400 in FreeBSD Infrastructure Modernization | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-08-26
Can't argue it's niche but it's far from uncommon. The BSD licensing allows usage in places allergic to the GPL so you see it (or don't) often used behind the scenes in lots of products.
...and I'm writing this comment on a Lenovo T450s running FreeBSD. Dang can probably verify the user agent of my POST, if he has nothing better to do (pretty sure he does).
The experience is not perfect (just _now_ I'm enjoying fighting with a deskhop (https://github.com/hrvach/deskhop) which isn't seen as a ums pointing device unless another usb mouse is also present, but that's the first problem in months (admittedly it's also the first change in as many months)).

Building Split Flap Displays. Started 18 months ago and kept me on a super interesting learning path. First shot was using open source designs (https://github.com/scottbez1/splitflap), but then kept building more and more parts myself. Coming from a software engineering background, getting into designing mechanical things – and then more importantly the electronics around it - has been really challenging, but also very rewarding. At this point I have my own screen printed flaps, custom PCB Design and a, what I consider, really smart protocol that allows me to daisy chain a basically arbitrary number of display elements. It's fun!

I'm looking specifically for comments involving GCP and Silvias as I struggle to see a better option for us 'hackers.' Posting a separate comment about the Gagguino project [1] unless I find one. Would be happy to hear of a better path to Decent-level performance.

Project mention: SofleKeyboard – A split keyboard based on Lily58, Crkbd and Helix keyboards | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-07-22
My brain can't make low-keycount boards work, personally.
Ended up designing a 64-key one with displays: https://github.com/tzarc/keyboards/tree/main/Djinn -- can't see myself going any fewer than that.

Project mention: Ask HN: What do I need to do to start with virtual robotics? | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-03-04I maintain a list of interesting robotics projects (https://github.com/msadowski/awesome-weekly-robotics). You will find a simulator section there but whether they are useful for you will depend on the details of your project. I don’t think it’s there but you could also check out MuJoCo.
